http://seedup.sargodarya.de/ is an online pod ranking service that keeps tracks of all the pods online. According to Sargo Darya, the purpose of seedup.sargodarya.de is to:

1. Provide a public list of pods that users who cannot afford to setup their own pod can choose one and connect.
2. A tool for seed maintainers to get statistics, down alerts etc.

So far the service has been very successful and has listed twelve pods. Seedup.sargodarya.de is a recommended place for starters with Diaspora.  

How to make new friends on Diaspora

Please note that Diaspora is not official yet and most of the public pods are being wiped clean on a regular basis.

You can start by signing up with a public pod. A good one is http://my-seed.com/. When you are signed in, you would usually have no friends. You can start by adding new friends by sending them your seed user name or by sending users a friend request by submitting their seed or login through request friend box.

Once done, new friends will appear under the [Manage] tab. There you can categories where you want to add your friends and remove friends. Eventually once setup, you will receive a default profile picture. You can change this default picture by creating a new album in your photos section and uploading a picture.  

Diaspora terminology...

Seeds is the user account one can use to connect to a pod on the specific server. With one seed, you can connect with other seeds (friends) on other pods (networks). So mahen23@my-seed.com can friend with johnsmith@aurora.com. Seeds work the other way round too where you can add a person to your seed by adding his seed. 

Pods are basically the physical server on which you are running the Diaspora thin server. A Pod can handle a number of seeds (or user accounts). Pods address is the my-seed.com part in mahen23@my-seed.com.

Aspects are categories of your social life. For example, Family is one aspects where you can put all your family members and Work is another aspect where you can add all your work collegues. Diaspora comes with two aspects, Family and work are the two default aspects you have at install. Aspects also acts like filters where a status message posted in the Family section will not be seen in the Work section and vice versa.

Hi, this is a new blog about the Diaspora social networking tool. Diaspora has been released to developers as pre-alpha on 15th September 2010. However, due to lack of  documentation, the project is fairly obscure to the whole world. So this is my aim as a developer myself to concentrate all the knowledge around the internet community into this one blog.

Note that Diaspora is still in early release and is subject to change, but i will try to upate all the related blogs as necessary.
